Minister Franz Untersteller presents certificates to trainees

Recognition of the “Sustainability and ecological management in the hospitality industry” projects for seven trainee hotel specialists

Over the course of a school year, the second-year trainees at the ECOINN Hotel am Campus developed sustainable projects, which they have now presented at the closing event in Stuttgart’s “Wizemann-Space”. The pilot project, in which two trainees from the Hotel Hirsch in Ostfildern also took part, was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment and will be continued next year, but without the federal association UnternehmensGrün e.V., which sponsored the pilot project. The next round will be organised by Prof. Dr. Sandra Rochnowski of the SRH Hotel Akademie Dresden and by ECOINN manager Thomas Puchan, whom interested hotels in Baden-Württemberg can contact from now on.

The idea behind the project is that, after their training, trainees take sustainable know-how with them to other businesses at home and abroad and implement it there.

Ana Garcia Galvez (ECOINN) presented, in words and pictures, a garden bed that she and her fellow trainees laid out and cultivated according to ecological principles and whose produce, such as herbs and fruit, is used at the hotel breakfast. The mint is used in the welcome cocktail for hotel guests.

Julieta Schechtel, who like Ana Garcia Galvez comes from Málaga, had chosen raising hotel guests’ awareness of waste separation as her project. Together with her fellow trainee Filip Peric, she installed a waste separation system in the ECOINN’s entrance area, where guests can dispose of their rubbish separately.

Ira Kauderer and her colleague Johannes from the Hotel Hirsch focused on energy and replaced the hotel’s existing light bulbs with LEDs – with great economic success, as they were amazed to find: energy savings well into double figures were the reward for their efforts, and with it high praise from the management.

In five workshops spread over six months, with various renowned speakers, the trainees also learned background information and facts about reconciling ecology, economy and social concerns.

The reward for their commitment was today’s closing event and the certificate presented by the Environment Minister himself.
