Nachhaltig übernachten und tagen, mitten in Esslingen am Neckar!

Europe’s Most Ecological Hotel!

Since opening in 2009, the ECOINN Hotel am Campus has been the most ecological hotel in Germany, and for at least two years now even the most ecological hotel in Europe in terms of CO2 footprint per overnight stay.

The energy self-sufficient building produces considerably more electricity in its own hydroelectric plant than it consumes and feeds the surplus into the grid of Energiewerke Schönau, which also operates ecologically.

Heat is also generated on site from Neckar water, using a heat pump and heat exchangers. In addition, the waste heat from the turbine is used for heating.

According to its current CO2 footprint, the ECOINN Hotel has residual CO2 emissions of 3.126 kg per overnight stay, which adds up to 76.70 tonnes a year.

The surplus of 283,304 kWh that we feed into the public grid each year displaces more than 230 tonnes of CO2 from the grid, so these residual emissions are easily and significantly more than offset, as “Viabono” has also confirmed. Beyond offsetting, we therefore save the environment 153.30 tonnes of CO2 every year!

Green Meetings

The affiliated ECONVENT conference venue, opened in 2015, is supplied with renewable electricity by the ECOINN and also has a water-source heat pump.

The extensive renovation of two historic buildings and their use as a hotel and conference venue made it possible to secure the future of these two Esslingen buildings and to preserve the townscape at these prominent locations on the edge of the historic old town.

Green Cleaning

Since the end of 2018 the hotel has been cleaned with ecological steam cleaners, specially designed for hotel rooms and requiring no cleaning agents at all. This reduces water pollution and eliminates the risk of allergies for our staff. They also use less water than conventional cleaning would.

Green Eating

Our breakfast buffet is eco-certified and, with over 80 % organic and over 90 % regional products, offers true superfood of the highest quality!

Hotel Rooms Made from Renewable Materials

Most of the ECOINN’s furnishings, from the room furniture to the reception desk, were made from FSC-certified bamboo, considered particularly sustainable, in the company’s own joinery workshop for people with disabilities. Environmentally friendly linoleum covers the floors of the hotel rooms made from renewable materials. The hotel is lit exclusively with energy-saving and LED lights. The walls are papered with recycled-paper wallpaper and painted with organic paint. Natural tiles were used in the bathrooms.

Social

By far the lowest CO2 emissions per overnight stay of any European hotel, according to its CO2 footprint, demonstrate the ECOINN’s high ecological standards. Alongside ecology, social responsibility also matters greatly to us. Employees with disabilities are given preference in recruitment, and young people from countries with high youth unemployment complete their three-year training as hotel specialists at the ECOINN.

The ECOINN also places young people in training at other hotels in the Esslingen-Stuttgart area, looks after them and organises weekly German language courses for them. For these activities the hotel received the “Innovationspreis Ausbildung” (Training Innovation Award) from the Stuttgart Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2018. The ECOINN also organises sustainable education formats, for which it will found its own academy in 2019. An association for the promotion of sustainability in the hospitality industry, founded at the same time and supported by several well-known companies, provides financial backing for these educational activities.

Regional Partners

Only regional craftspeople and companies were involved in converting the ECONVENT conference venue, just 200 metres away. The local parquet wood, for example, came from Ökoparkett Schäfer in Ammerbuch near Tübingen, and the highly efficient LED lights from the Stuttgart manufacturer Nimbus Group. With high ceilings and windows and a view of the Maille Park, meeting at the ECONVENT feels like meeting in a palace.

Emphatically Sustainable

Not least thanks to its energy profile, the ECONVENT is, as the Ministry of the Environment has also certified, the most sustainable events venue in Germany.

The ECOINN Hotel am Campus has received numerous awards and certifications for its exemplary sustainable practices and is a member of, among others, a “green” hotel cooperative and the federal associations B.A.U.M. e.V. and UnternehmensGrün e.V., both national associations of sustainably operating companies.

As one of the first signatories, the ECOINN has also signed the WIN Charter (Charter of the Sustainability Business Initiative) of the state of Baden-Württemberg, as well as the “Charta der Vielfalt” (Diversity Charter) in Berlin, which clearly commits signatories to diversity in business.
